# 世界最古の自動販売機は2000年前、聖水を盗ませないために生まれた

自動販売機といえば、日本の駅前にずらりと並ぶ現代文明の象徴だ。硬貨を入れると商品が出てくる、あの便利な機械が世に出たのはせいぜい100年ちょっと前——と思いきや、記録に残る最初の一台は2000年近く前に動いていた。

作ったのは、ローマ支配下のエジプト・アレクサンドリアで活動したギリシャ人技術者、ヘロン。紀元1世紀か2世紀ごろの人物とされる。蒸気で回る球体「アイオロスの球」や、風で動くオルガンを作った古代きっての発明家だ。そのヘロンが手がけた装置のひとつが、硬貨を入れると決まった量の水が出てくる機械だった。出てくるのはジュースでもコーヒーでもない。神殿の聖水である。

動機がまた身も蓋もない。当時の神殿では、参拝者が聖水を自己申告で持ち帰る方式だった。つまり良心に任せていたわけで、案の定、払った分より多く汲んでいく人が後を絶たなかった。そこで神殿側の悩みを機械で解決したのがヘロンだ。信仰心に訴えるのではなく、物理で解決する。技術者らしい発想である。

仕組みは驚くほどよく出来ている。上部の投入口に硬貨を落とすと、てこにつながった皿の上に硬貨が乗る。その重みで皿が傾き、反対側の弁が開いて水が流れ出す。皿はさらに傾き続け、やがて硬貨が滑り落ちる。硬貨が消えた瞬間、重りがてこを跳ね上げて弁を閉じる——つまり「水が出る時間」を硬貨の重さと皿の傾き速度で決めていたわけだ。電気もセンサーもない時代に、課金と給付を機械だけで完結させている。ヘロン自身はこれを「供物の器」と呼んだ。

ちなみに、この発明の続きがなかなか現れない。記録に残る次の硬貨式販売機が登場するのは、なんと1500年以上あとの1615年、イギリスの酒場に置かれた真鍮製のタバコ販売機だった。ヘロンは後世の人々より1500年早く到着してしまったのである。
