# 追い詰められたテキサスツノトカゲ、目から血を1.5メートル噴く

北米の乾いた土地に、体中がトゲだらけの平たいトカゲがいる。テキサスツノトカゲだ。大人でも体長は7.5〜13センチほどで、頭には角が冠のように並び、見た目は小さな恐竜そのもの。奇妙だが、この手のひらサイズのトカゲの最終兵器は、目から噴き出す血である。

敵に追い詰められると、目の縁から真っ赤な血を勢いよく噴射するのだ。飛距離は最大1.5メートル、自分の体長の10倍先まで届く。しかも、でたらめに漏らすのではなく狙いをつけて飛ばす。

仕組みは意外に単純だ。危険を感じたツノトカゲは、まず頭へ向かう血流を絞る。すると行き場を失った血が眼窩の血管洞に集まって圧力が高まり、そばの筋肉が収縮したところで目のまわりの細い血管が破れる。溜まっていた血が、その圧で目の端から一筋飛び出す。相手が逃げ出すまで、何度も繰り返すこともできる。

ただ、血をかけられただけなら相手は驚いて終わりだ。効き目の本体は、味のほうにある。ツノトカゲの主食は毒を持つシュウカクアリで、その毒の成分が体内で代謝され、血の中に不快な味として残ると考えられている。なぜここまでひどい味になるのかは、今も議論が続いている。

この血が効くのは、主に哺乳類の捕食者に対してだという。犬やキツネはあからさまな嫌悪の反応を示し、追跡をやめてしまう。鼻と舌で獲物を確かめる相手にこそ刺さる武器なのだ。

そして血は、あくまで最後の手段である。まずは砂や岩に紛れる擬態で、動きを止めてやり過ごす。見つかれば短距離の全力ダッシュと急停止を繰り返して追跡者を撹乱し、それでも捕まりそうなら体を膨らませて大きく、よりトゲだらけに見せる。目から血が出るのは、その全部が通じなかったあとだ。

ちなみに、噴いたあとの血まみれの目はどうなるのか。トカゲには瞬膜という透明な第三のまぶたがあり、これが眼球の表面をひと拭きして血をぬぐい取る。派手な大技の後始末は、ワイパー一往復で終わるのだ。
