# 一枚の申告書がオーストラリアのワイン産業を沈めた日

オーストリアのワインといえば、昨今は辛口の白が評価されている。だが1985年、この国のワイン産業は一度ほぼ壊滅している。甘口の白ワインに、一部の不凍液に使われる工業薬品ジエチレングリコールを混ぜて売っていたことが露見したのだ。

この偽装を暴いたのは、鋭い舌を持つ批評家ではなかった。あるブドウ栽培農家が、ジエチレングリコールを工業用の量でまとめ買いし、それを農業用の経費として所得税の申告に計上していた。ところが申告された量は、どう見てもその農家の規模と釣り合わない。彼が持っていた農機具は、小さなトラクター1台きりだった。計算の合わなさに気づいた税務担当者が、農家にとって一番聞かれたくない質問を投げる。この一枚の申告書がきっかけで、ブドウ畑に捜索令状が下りたのだ。

なぜ薬品を混ぜたのか。当時の最大の輸出先は西ドイツで、現地のスーパーや瓶詰め業者と「この甘さの等級のワインをこれだけの量納める」という長期契約が結ばれていた。甘口ワインは収穫を遅らせて糖度の上がったブドウから造るもので、等級付きのワインには外部から糖を加えることが禁じられている。つまり熟度が上がらなかった年は、契約をごまかす余地がない。実際1982年の収穫は熟度が足りず、出来上がったのは薄くて酸っぱい白ワインだった。

そこで使われたのがジエチレングリコールである。無色無臭でわずかに甘く、とろりとした粘りがある。1リットルに数グラム足すだけで、痩せたワインが蜜のようなコクを持つ高級な遅摘みワインに化けた。しかも当時の一般的な化学分析では、この薬品はほとんど検出できなかった。砂糖を足せば糖の検査に引っかかるが、これは検査項目の外にいたのだ。味も騙せて検査も通る。だからこの手口は、露見するまで10年近く業界に根を張っていたという。

代償は、数軒のワイナリーの信用失墜では済まなかった。1985年以前は年間およそ4500万リットルあったオーストリアワインの輸出量は、翌1986年には440万リットル。きれいに10分の1である。そしてこの穴は一年では埋まらなかった。輸出量が5000万リットル超に伸びて事件前の水準に並んだのは2001年、報道から16年後のことだという。この間にオーストリアは甘口から辛口白へ生産の軸を移し、ワイン法も厳格化した。健康被害による死者は確認されていないが、評判のほうはほぼ一世代分戻らなかったのだ。

ちなみに、押収された膨大な量の偽装ワインは、捨て方そのものが難題になった。最終的には国内の発電所が、このワインを燃やして電気に変える方法を見つけたという。飲まれるために造られたワインが、最後は燃料として処理されたのである。
